What Arrived: Customer has had recurring issues with a wobble in his drive shaft. Feeder will be picked up and dropped off by Jim Iler as he lives in close proximity to the customer. Customer is looking for a quick turnaround on this unit. (Machine Serial Number:0805-08030)
Description of Problem: (1) MFT 250ip Friction Feeder (S/N 0805-08030) (2) 115 Degree Magazine Side Plates (One deeper than the other, one short side for ease of loading) (2) Product Support Rods (2) 30mm Feed Belts (Appear to be non OEM replacements) (2) 30mm Stripper Wheels (Either soft durometer FDA or also non OEM replacements) (4) 20mm Discharge Belts (Either from age/product handling, or also non OEM replacements) (1) Emitter/Receiver Pair (1) Set of Side Guides (1) 3 Color Stack Light (Green bulb is burned out)
Work Done: Performed check in diagnostics to machine. Observed the customer reported shaft wobble in the drive shaft. Removed all center piece shafts and internal belts and pulleys in order to evaluate the feeders bearings. The right bearing housing bearings seem fine, but there is a large amount of slop in the sliding block assemblies. The left bearing housing is in much worse condition, with all of its bearings worn, with a couple that are very bad. There is also slop in the sliding blocks in this bearing housing. The end piece shaft on in the left bearing housing that connects to the drive shaft is also damaged. It appears that the source of the wobble is excess tension being placed on the drive shaft by the non OEM feed belts. This has caused the bearings and the end piece shaft to incur damage. Prepared quote, sent to customer. 01/20/15 MC P.O. was received, continued work on feeder. Starting with pulling the bearing housing for bearing and end piece shaft replacement. Installed new bearings and end piece shafts. Reinstalled bearing housings in feeder. 01/20/15 MC Continued reassembly process starting with the mechanical drive of the feeder, both left and right sides. Installed new cooling fan. Installed new feed belts and reinstalled all center piece shafts and discharge. Installed new sensor. checked to ensure that the shaft wobble has been corrected. The shaft is now spinning true. Put machine into short burn in until the feeder is handed over to Jim Iler later today to personally deliver the feeder to the customers facility. RMA processed under SO#023704. 01/21/15 MC
Repair Quotation Notes: Completed By: Found the cause of the drive shaft wobble to be excessive tension on the shaft from non OEM feed belts being used on the machine. The feed belts were way too tight, this led to damage in the bearings and the end piece shafts on both sides of the drive shaft, as well as to the bearings in the idler pulleys. Both end piece shafts, bearings, and idler pulleys should be replaced. During evaluation it was discovered that all of the bearings in the left housing are worn, ranging from normal wear and tear to severe damage. We recommend that the rest of the bearings in the left bearing housing are replaced as well. In addition to this, the feed belts should be replaced with the correct OEM belts to ensure proper tension and to avoid further damage. There is also a cooling fan that is missing a blade in the operator side feeder case that should be replaced. The rest of the machine seems to be in working order, one thing to point out is that the product sensor is getting weak. It may have some life left in it, but it could fail soon. It will be listed on the repair quote, but if there are spares on hand you should be able to get by until it fails altogether. Repair quote does not reflect final charges for service of this unit. Other problems either mechanical or electrical may arise during the RMA process due to natural causes. Quoted labor is an estimate. Actual labor time will be billed. This quote does not reflect shipping charges. All items will be shipped via UPS ground unless otherwise specified on purchase order. A $475.00 diagnostic/administration/handling fee will be applied to an item the customer deems is uneconomical to repair. All replaced and un-repairable items will be disposed of, unless otherwise stated on purchase order. * A hard copy purchase order that agrees to repair quote charges is required before work can continue.
